Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
